Thank you for joining our web site. We have been involved with monkeys for over 25 years and there is no other animal in comparison to them except humans. They are such a joy and fun companions. They are high maintenance too. We created this site for you to learn about macaque behaviors and their beautiful looks too. This is nothing like getting a dog or cat. They are like getting a child. You have to be prepared to change diapers and make bottles of baby formula. They need lots of patience, love and attention everyday. Macaques are Old World monkeys and are the most spread out primate next to man. They adapt very well to different environments. Macaques have cheek pouches to store food (and other things) until they can relax to eat it. Macaques swim very well and run and walk on all fours. Monkeys are territorial and do not like kids. The excitement and high energy makes them nervous and they usually want to bite them or at least get away from them. Macaques tails are not prehensile so they cannot use them to hang with. There are much more males born than females. The reason is hierarchy. If you think you might like to have a monkey, there are some important things to consider. First, please make sure you have a vet available who knows primates. You never know when he might get sick or need stitches. Also see if it is ok to have a monkey in your community. You can call your local Animal Control for that information. This decision also needs to be accepted with all family members too. Make sure you have enough room for a monkey to have its own space. They are very territorial and will depend on a place to feel like their own and feel safe in it. Monkeys need a lot of time to spend with their owners. At least every four hours they will want to eat, so a full time job out of the house is dangerous to the baby monkey. The next important thing is to do a lot of research. You need to know what you are getting yourself into. We have been able to give many neglected monkeys a home because people just didn't know how to deal with this sensitive animal. Before you go on please read information published by the Simian Society - under the "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT A MONKEY" link. It has many good points that can even sound harsh, but must be thought out. |
